What
is a Rosacea Specialist?
By the strictest definition, a "Rosacea Specialist" is a
person who has advanced training in human physiology (how the body
works under normal conditions) and pathophysiology (how it works in
diseased states) from an accredited University School of
Medicine. This person must have expertise in skin anatomy and
function, blood vessels, nerves and skin receptors. This person
must also have completed a specialized Post-Doctoral Fellowship or
Residency at a University School of Medicine. Lastly, this person
must focus most of his research, clinical testing, and/or publishing on
rosacea to be considered a rosacea specialist. Dr. Nase has
fulfilled all the above criteria.
Co-Investigator
in Rosacea Clinical Study, Grant & Rosacea Patent
Dr. Nase performed one of the first in-depth clinical
studies on the effect of Photoderm on rosacea symptoms. He was
co-investigator with Dr. Patrick Bitter, Sr. a Dermatologist and Laser
Specialist for the Institute of Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery, in
California, USA.
Dr. Bitter and Dr. Nase demonstrated that after 5
Photoderm treatments most rosacea symptoms were significantly reduced
or completely cleared (57 rosacea patients were randomly selected for
this clinical study):
- 86% of rosacea sufferers reported significant
improvement in facial redness
- 84% reported significant improvement in broken blood
vessels (telangiectasia)
- 76% reported significant improvement in facial
flushing intensity & duration
- 63% reported significant improvement or clearance in
rosacea papules
- 82% reported significant improvement in uneven
facial pigment
- 79% reported significant improvenet in skin texture
( lumpy-bumpy texture).
Dr. Nase and Dr. Bitter then published their clinical
results and techniques in a medical textbook, "Lasers in Aesthetic
Surgery". Bitter, P., Sr. and Nase, G.P. "Skin
Rejuvenation for Sun Damage, Aging and Rosacea using Intense Pulsed
Light." Lasers in Aesthetic Surgery. Thieme Medical Publishers,
2000, pgs. 351 - 357.
Dr. Nase and Dr. Patrick Bitter
Sr. also patented a novel topical to increase the effectiveness of
laser treatments and to reduce facial redness:

"Your textbook, “Beating Rosacea”
is superb. It is by far the best researched and best written book to
date on rosacea. You are a dedicated scientist who has made great
strides in advancing the knowledge about rosacea and related vascular
disorders. All physicians should have a copy of your book on
understanding and treating rosacea. I am recommending your book to all
of my patients. I look forward to working with you on many new and
exciting rosacea projects in the near future."

“I
have found this book very helpful indeed and many of my patients have
found it invaluable as a reference text. Geoffrey Nase's contribution
to the Acne Rosacea knowledge base is impressive. I ended up buying a
second copy because my first one was well worn and frequently loaned
out.”

"I have never seen so much
information on rosacea treatments in one place. I have a new motivation
to treat the vascular nature of rosacea and try to listen more closely
to my patients' complaints about flushing episodes and trigger
avoidance. I am now treating rosacea more aggressively with oral
medications listed in your book such as anti-hypertensive meds,
sympathetic nerve blockers, isotretinoin and anti-inflammatory
antibiotics. Most patients have experienced significant improvements
with your treatment suggestions and some look to be rosacea-free. I
just ordered several copies of your book for my office and colleagues.
You are providing an invaluable service. Please add me to your email
list so that I may be kept abreast of any new rosacea treatments in the
near future. Thank you."

"We are seeing more and more
rosacea patients each month. Several of my patients have brought your
book into my office. I finally purchased your book specifically for the
treatment section. We are now treating our rosacea patients with the
newer macrolide antibiotics, accutane, naproxen and refer patients to
see laser specialists. This has resulted in significant symptom
clearance in most of our patients. We appreciate the time and effort
that it must have taken to organize and detail rosacea treatments for
both physicians and patients. As a physician, I appreciate the medical
references and excerpts from clinical studies. Please add me to your
list of physicians so that we may be notified of any new rosacea
treatments, especially pertaining to the treatment of flushing."

Dr.
Nase's Mission Statement, Patient Advocacy & Funding for Rosacea
Dr. Nase is a rosacea specialist and a rosacea sufferer.
He is an independent researcher whose only goal is to increase rosacea
understanding and stimulate the development of better rosacea
treatments. He makes recommendations based on medical and naturopathic
treatments that are known to provide the greatest clearance of rosacea
symptoms.
- Dr. Nase's Mission Statement:
"I am committed to educating physicians and patients about rosacea, and
in stimulating research to find better treatments and eventually a
cure."
- Rosacea Patient Advocate: The
Internet is now the # 1 place to sell rosacea sufferers expensive
skincare products, treatments and physician services. Many of the
claims presented are misleading and some rosacea products are harmful.
Rosacea sufferers do not have any "Consumer Reporter" in their
corner. One of my goals is to be a voice of reason and put things
in perspective so rosacea sufferers can make an informed decision.
- Dr. Nase's Funding for Rosacea Research:
Dr. Nase personally funds his rosacea research, publications and
website through proceeds generated from his book and quarterly report
subscriptions. Dr. Nase has been approached by dozens of skin care
companies, physicians and pharmaceutical companies to collaborate with
and endorse over 9 years. For 9 years he has not taken on any
sponsors. Dr. Nase will continue to disseminate all information and
cutting edge treatments to rosacea sufferers and if a select few meet
his criteria and standards, he may collaborate with them and take on
minimal sponsorship to help maintain his research and
publications. This would also point rosacea sufferers to the best
treatments and collaborations.
